Success or no success....What determines it?

We all want success in training for an event or achieving a goal. Maybe you are striving to lose weight, fit in those skinny jeans or PR at an event. When it seems like everyone around you is making gains and you are left in the dust, have you wondered why? Believe me this is something EVERYONE goes through, even coaches, trainers, top athletes and beginners.

Coaches and trainers are extremely beneficial, as the two biggest complaints from clients are they struggle with ACCOUNTABILITY and MOTIVATION. Good coaches and trainers are phenomenal at supporting this. After coaching a diverse group of folks in several aspects of fitness I have determined some very import keys to success in fitness. These are elements that I require my clients to give 100% effort at. With maximum effort towards these factors clients will achieve their goals. Now, these elements don’t come easy, they don’t come without change, AND they must continually be worked on and adapted to.

1.)    Be Honest- You gain nothing from lying to yourself or your coach about what you ate over the weekend.

2.)    Stay Connected- hiding your progress, success and failures only cheats YOU. Learn from your mistakes, celebrate your achievements and track your progress. Get involved in groups, buddy systems, and tracking progress via apps.

3.)    Be Accepting- If you cannot accept change you’ll fail in fitness. Your body is constantly changing therefor your workouts and nutrition should too. This will also keep motivation high.

4.)    Anti-Excuse- We all have excuses, but that’s exactly what they are. If you have an excuse for everything, a sore muscle, a twinge, and hiccup etc. you will always be seeing the end of the road. Figure out what the difference between sore and injured is. Determine your time for exercising so you are not using your schedule as an excuse. If you miss a workout, forget about it and move on to the next…stop dwelling on it.

5.)    Be Coachable- If you ask for help you must be open to hearing the feedback. Realize what you may have been doing in the past is not working, hence why you are reaching out for help or why you may not be seeing results (see #3). Being coachable also means trying new things, being outside your comfort zone and experimenting. Being coachable also requires you be honest (see #1).

If you feel you are lacking in any of these areas you may want to discuss this with a coach. Have them evaluate your history, progress and goals to see if you are on the right track or need some extra guidance. Coaches are not forever, but what you’ll learn from them can last a lifetime.
